Constructing and commissioning an interconnector is a major undertaking, requiring a thorough environmental and technical assessment. We have been working with Greenlink since 2018, across areas including feasibility, procurement and technical assurance.
Our Interconnectors team, which has been supported by offshore consultants Intertek, provides deep knowledge of areas such as HVDC control and protection and the valve technology used to convert from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). While integrating with the client team, they’re also able to call on colleagues from across WSP with expertise in ecology, environment and geotechnics.
Since preparing the final project assessment submission to Ofgem and Irish regulator CRU that demonstrated the cost efficiency of the project, we have gone on to develop the technical specifications and procure construction contracts that provide a full turnkey solution from converter manufacturer Siemens and cable manufacturer Sumitomo. Because this is the first interconnector to be financed by commercial banks, we had to deliver some creative solutions that ensured the project would be bankable.
James O’Reilly (Greenlink CEO) has stated; “WSP has been the lead technical advisor to the Greenlink interconnector since their appointment in March 2018. The services provided by WSP include initial assessments, preparation of technical studies, specifications and procurement support. They are now undertaking reviews of detailed engineering designs and construction monitoring. Greenlink is very satisfied with the support provided by WSP, and we will continue to work together until the end of construction in 2024.”
Our team will continue to work with Greenlink in an all-encompassing role as client’s engineer, supporting the project through construction and into commercial operation.
