WSP, together with Hong Kong Government’s Water Supplies Department, AJC Joint Venture and Black & Veatch Hong Kong Limited, has attained an honourable mention at Autodesk Hong Kong BIM Awards 2020 for the successful collaboration on the first stage of Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant.
Now in its 14th edition, the award recognises professionals driving the industry’s transformation through the use of BIM.
As the BIM manager as well as structural and building services engineer of the project, WSP has been utilising BIM for a seamless collaboration with other parties for 12 main buildings of the plant in a fast-track programme of 39 months.
With a BIM-enabled platform featuring cloud-based common data environment, collaborators from six locations around the world could synchronise project information with up-to-date models, which were federated as the master BIM model. Apart from achieving Level 2 BIM in design, checking and submission processes, WSP has combined the models with project schedule to visualise 4D phase planning, greatly improving the sequencing of works.
WSP has also integrated BIM with other latest technologies to build the two guard houses on both side of the site. The plant is also visualised in VR with BIM model for better communications in an interactive and collaborative approach.
The Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant is the first-of-its-kind facility in Hong Kong using reverse osmosis technology to provide the city with a strategic water source not susceptible to climate change with a water production capacity at 135,000m3 per day and an ultimate capacity up to 270,000m3 per day upon future expansion. It has also been recognised as one of the ‘BIM Projects 2020’ in the Celebration of BIM Achievement 2020 organised by Construction Industry Council earlier this month.
