But working against nature can have negative consequences. The process caused the Maketū estuary to silt and biodiversity to crash. Following a multi-decade campaign led by local Maori groups, a re-diversion of the river has begun the process of restoring the land and water to its former health. The restoration of flow to the estuary and the wetland re-creation has seen the return of finfish and bird species.
WSP planners have been an integral part of the project from start to finish, pivoting from community engagement and concept development in the initial phases, to the consenting process and subsequent legal challenges. We also acted as project managers and client representatives during construction and commissioning.
Tune in to hear more about this great project!
