Pioneering approach to shape the strategy
To shape the strategy, WSP drew upon global and local research to provide insights into emerging trends and technologies, and to identify opportunities suited to Bradfield City Centre.
Australian waste data indicates that whilst ongoing efforts to improve landfill diversion rates through waste stream separation and recycling, total waste volumes generated have remained relatively stable. In contrast, guided by WPCA’s strong commitment to waste reduction and circular economy, the strategy adopted a pioneering approach by setting ambitious targets for waste generation reduction, across both operations and construction.
To guide the practical achievement of these targets, the strategy identified that a system of initiatives would be required to monitor the life cycle of the precinct. This strategy focuses on three key areas: designing for efficient operational waste management, supporting waste management systems from users’ perspectives, and applying circular design principles to minimise construction waste.
Key strengths of the strategy include:
-
Holistic strategy covering waste generation reduction during the construction and operation phases of Bradfield City Centre.
-
The strategy is anchored by circular economy principles and sets pioneering targets for reducing waste from entering the system.
-
Flexibility to accommodate:
— Development stage-ability
— Material types and volumes management
— Interface with future processing technologies.
-
Has a strong focus on enhancing the liveability of residents and businesses to call Bradfield City Centre home by minimising the movement of waste collection vehicles and fostering a sense of community.
-
The implementation of a Circular Economy Hub and sharing initiatives such as sharing hubs (e.g. toys, tools, libraries), community event days, leasing opportunities and community gardens.
-
Consideration of opportunities for last-mile logistics and industrial symbiosis.
