The first stage of the Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant started its operation on 22 December. Upon entering into full operation, the plant will meet around 5% of the overall fresh water demand in Hong Kong with a water production capacity at 135,000m3 per day. The plant, together with the Pak Kong Water Treatment Works and the Tseung Kwan O Primary Fresh Water Service Reservoir, will supply drinking water to Sai Kung, as well as parts of East Kowloon and Hong Kong Island.
Working closely with AJC joint venture and Hong Kong’s Water Supplies Department, WSP has been providing multidisciplinary engineering design services for the facility, including civil, building services, architectural and landscape design as well as BIM management and BEAM Plus consultancy.
Our innovative civil engineering design approach and efficient BIM collaborations have earned the project several accolades, including Edmund Hambly Medal of ICE Awards 2023, as well as recognitions from Construction Industry Council and Autodesk Hong Kong.
The commissioning marks a significant milestone of the project as well as Hong Kong’s Total Water Management strategy. WSP is proud to have our Future Ready mindset and technical expertise integrated into this strategic climate infrastructure of Hong Kong.
Future expansion plan will increase the water production capacity of the plant, which is expected to meet around 10% of the city’s overall fresh water demand.
