COP26
It’s Time To Accelerate Climate Action
This November, all eyes were on the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland, where governments convened to reach agreements for accelerating efforts towards a low-carbon economy and limiting global temperature rise below 1.5°C.
Nearly 200 countries agreed to the rules on implementing the 2015 Paris Climate Accord including global carbon market and financial commitments to help countries adapt to climate change. Major progress was also made on reducing deforestation and methane emissions.
COP26 was undoubtedly far from perfect but nonetheless it does represent a substantial move forward on climate action. Much of this progress was driven by businesses leaders and other non-state actors who underlined their resolve towards a net zero and resilient future.
Yet none of these pledges mean anything without implementation. Keeping 1.5 degree alive only works if every aspect of these commitments is delivered as a minimum.
WSP’s climate change and sustainability experts are closely following the discussions, negotiations, and agreements to provide our clients and stakeholders with insights that will help prepare for the transition to a low-carbon future.
As global sustainability leaders, WSP has a crucial role to play in finding solutions to some of the world’s biggest environmental and social challenges. We have made our own commitment to achieve net zero emissions across our value chain by 2040 using science-based greenhouse gas reduction targets. In addition, our Future Ready global innovation program challenges and inspires our people to work with clients to implement solutions that are both ready for today and the years to come.
Whether we are delivering high-speed rail systems, designing transportation infrastructure to provide access to remote communities or supporting adaptation to climate change risks, we are committed to providing solutions for a greener future.
