Existing Buildings

To achieve net zero emissions, there needs to be a shift towards reusing and retrofitting our existing building stock. We are already seeing this with some planning authorities taking a retrofit first stance. Working with the constraints of an existing structure can pose its challenges, but there are also opportunities such as reduced planning risk, reduced environmental impact on neighbours, significant savings in embodied carbon, risk reduction from lack of ground works, enhanced programme certainty and reputational opportunities.

Retrofitting our London office to create an exceptionally sustainable workplace

For our own leased office, our building systems engineers pioneered innovative systems that use free cooling. This reduced energy consumption by more than 65%, putting us on track to achieving a NABERS rating.

Estates and Building Portfolios

Many buildings are on the cusp of becoming stranded assets due to the changes in environmental standards and societal shifts – they are depreciating in value, undesirable to occupants and no longer fit for purpose. It is therefore important to identify, reduce and manage the risk of individual assets or larger portfolios, to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions while enhancing valuations and protecting your corporate reputation.

New Buildings

New buildings will last well beyond 2050. Those involved in delivering new developments should be striving for far higher standards than current regulations require, anticipating future changes and regulations to ensure their development remains fit for purpose in a changing world. Building new requires a holistic approach, innovative methods including massing orientation studies, materials, and technologies to achieve energy efficiency and low carbon emissions. Using more sustainable nature-based materials will play an important role too.
