Promoting walking and urban life is an important tactic by which Tampere aims to achieve the targets set in the city strategy. The goal is to have the city be prosperous, safe, sustainable, attractive, and vibrant by 2030. In cooperation with Tampere, we prepared the walking and urban life program, which creates guidelines for the comprehensive and cross-administrative work of promoting walking.
The goals of the program, drawn up in 2018, describe the kind of city in which walking trips become more common, and urban life flourishes. The program of measures, which was drawn up in 2021, determines the concrete steps and the stakeholders responsible for achieving the goals.
The walking and urban life program for the entire city was drawn up in extensive cooperation with the city's various service areas and units, and other key stakeholders. The goal of the interactive process was to form a common vision of the program's goals and measures, and to commit the city's units to the implementation of the measures.
The program for walking and urban life includes a total of 26 measures covering the entire city, which are aimed to be implemented during the period of 2022–2027. The sets of measures are related to the development of the city's guidelines and operating models, changes to the physical environment, organizing communication and interactions, and monitoring the amount, activities, conditions, resources and user satisfaction of walking and urban life.
A monitoring plan was also prepared for the program and goals, along with defined monitoring metrics that are used to track the effectiveness of the program's measures in relation to the goals set for the development of walking and urban life.
