The $600M upgrade project provides significant improvements and serves as part of the 2010 Olympic legacy.

One of the most beautiful stretches of road in the world, this 100km highway was once known as the “highway of death.” With over 10 million passenger-trips a year along this highway, the Sea-to-Sky Highway required a massive facelift ahead of the Vancouver Olympics. The most important client need was the widening of the road to improve driver sightlines and allowed room for other enhancements such as additional passing lanes and median barriers, thereby making things safer for motorists and cyclists.

BC’s first P3 project

The first design-build-finance-operate project in BC, the project has been recognized by 15 national and international awards, making it one of the most celebrated public-private partnerships in North America. The project also provided approximately $131 million in benefits to the community, including training and employment for many Indigenous workers, and recreational trail improvements along the highway.

Horseshoe Bay improvement

WSP was responsible for the design of the structures, highways, drainage and utilities on, for the highway sections above Horseshoe Bay, which included 10 bridges and 38 retaining walls. In all, the project successfully provided significant improvements to highway safety, reliability and capacity along the corridor. The number of vehicle collisions along the Sea-to-Sky Highway, has dropped by about one-third.
