The Interstate Bridge, located on Interstate 5, is a critical connection between Oregon and Washington. The bridge crosses the Columbia River and the state line between Oregon and Washington. The southbound span opened in 1917 and the southbound span opened in 1958. Replacing this aging bridge with a modern, seismically resilient, multimodal structure that provides improved mobility for people, goods and services is a high priority for Oregon and Washington.
WSP is working with the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and Oregon (ODOT) Department of Transportation as the General Engineering Consultant (GEC) on this project. As the GEC, our team provides the Interstate Bridge Replacement (IBR) program with digital product delivery and digital operations advisory services and resources needed to advance the program through NEPA completion (Record of Decision) and pre-construction. The IBR GEC team includes Knight Architects in the U.K. to support the creation of an iconic landmark for the cities of Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington, and a point of pride for stakeholders.
Digital Project Delivery and Digital Operations Advisory
WSP is working with our most innovative transportation clients to develop “digital twins” of our programs, utilizing digital project delivery and digital operations advisory. Digital project delivery involves providing the digital products and services related to capital project delivery. These are products and services associated with designing, constructing, and delivering an infrastructure asset as part of the capital project delivery phase of the asset life cycle. Digital operations advisory involves providing the digital products and services associated with infrastructure asset operations and maintenance activities that are carried out during the life of the built infrastructure facility.
Contributions to Decarbonization, Resiliency, Sustainability and/or Social Values
The IBR digital twin will define the entire lifecycle of the program from concept to design, into construction and then handing over an operational BIM Integrated Asset Management model to the client. This will be accomplished while allowing interventions for corrective actions and enabling better decision making for more effective outcomes, including those related to environmental review, cost estimating decarbonization, resiliency, sustainability, and social values.
The IBR program is committed to centering equity in our processes and our outcomes throughout the project lifecycle. We are engaging the community by elevating the voices of underserved communities throughout our processes and ensuring these communities receive the program’s economic and transportation benefits. We also commit to not furthering harm to these communities and leveraging digital delivery and digital operations advisory to achieve this.
