Awaited in the province for more than 30 years, the 42-km highway project is a significant contribution to Quebec society.

By extending the highway to bypass Montreal on the south shore, the A-30 project reduces traffic congestion on Canada’s most populated island. As one of the largest infrastructure projects in Quebec, the project was well timed as an analysis revealed that by 2016, the existing east-west highway, would not be able to handle all new passenger and freight transportation needs.

Our Approach

WSP served as Independent Engineer for this $1.5B, multiple award winning project that included two major bridges, a 2.5km bridge over the Beauharnois Canal culminating at a clearance of 38.5 m over the St. Lawrence Seaway, and a 1.86km bridge crossing the St. Lawrence River. The sheer size of the project, which saw the construction of 13 overpass bridges, 17 highway bridges, a 90-m-long tunnel, a 14-lane toll plaza, 11 interchanges, and 42 km of new four-lane highway. WSP was entrusted with the design review of bridges, tunnel, and highway works, as well as attestation and oversight of all project design and construction. During the construction phase, WSP was on site to ensure compliance and attest to the quality and conformity of the works by issuing 250 attestation completion certificates.
