WSP Projects win Five Engineering Awards at the 2019 CCE Awards

Transportation, community outreach and water resources projects have won 2019 Canadian Consulting Engineering (CCE) Awards.

WSP received five engineering awards at the 2019 CCE awards, organized by the Canadian Consulting Engineer (CCE) magazine and Association of Consulting Engineering Companies (ACEC) on October 29, 2019, in Ottawa, Ontario.

WSP’s Johnson Street Bridge Replacement project and Greater Vernon’s Water System: Duteau Creek Water Treatment UV Facility both earned the Award of Excellence. The Solving Small Community Drinking Water Challenge Project earned three awards including the Award of Excellence, Outreach Award and the best honour – the Schreyer Award – which recognizes the project that best demonstrates technical excellence and innovation.

Johnson Street Bridge Replacement – Award of Excellence

The City of Victoria needed to replace the 90-year old Johnson Street Bridge that serves as a gateway to the Inner Harbour and a key connector for the community. The bridge’s age made it vulnerable in the event of an earthquake. As prime consultant, WSP provided project and design management and construction support services. WSP was also responsible for the design of the bridge approach spans, moveable span rest pier, roadways and pathways, road safety and public plazas.

Greater Vernon’s Water System: Duteau Creek Water Treatment UV Facility – Award of Excellence

The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) required a filtration facility at the Duteau Creek Water Treatment Plant to meet the Drinking Water Regulations. With no public support to borrow the funds, WSP as the prime consultant, engineered and delivered an innovative ultraviolet disinfection facility within a small timeframe, that met the Drinking Water Regulations, reduced energy costs by over 10 per cent, and provided 99.99 per cent reliability saving RDNO millions.

Solving Small Community Drinking Water Challenges – Award of Excellence, Outreach Award and Schreyer Award

WSP collaborated with RES’EAU-WaterNET researchers to develop an innovative treatment system to improve water for small, remote communities. By removing organics that impede disinfection and can cause carcinogen formation, the new system reduces chemicals, wastage, and operator time – and provides safer water. WSP designed a full-scale treatment, lifting a remote community’s longstanding boil water advisory, and enabling environmental, social, and economic benefits – ultimately leading innovations towards helping many more communities.
