In general, the design work was exceptionally challenging due to the tunnels running beneath numerous existing property developments. The temporary and permanent lining of the tunnel were designed to withstand the loads from the above ground developments and to minimise the settlement of the structures.
A temporary traffic deck was erected to maintain the operation of a public transport interchange while construction of the South Horizons Station proceeded below. In order to move forward in the limited underground space, WSP relocated part of the station facilities and utilities to a two-storey building above ground.
With the platforms situated 40m below ground, the cavernous Lei Tung Station is one of the deepest stations in Hong Kong. The two-level underground station is comprised of a concourse on the upper level and an island platform on the lower level. Four high-speed passenger lifts carry passengers from street level to the concourse below.
We also prepared the detailed design of the Nam Fung Tunnel, a 3.3km-long drill-and-blast twin track tunnel, the drill-and-blast tunnel at Lei Tung, the cut-and-cover tunnel at Ap Lei Chau Drive, and the ventilation buildings at Hong Kong Park, Nam Fung Road, Lee Wing Street, a barging point and a magazine site.
