Fare Collection Systems

All public transport systems require a means to collect passenger fares. However, the implementation of a fare collection system, however, is more than a technological choice. By using an integrated system, transit authorities can gather data in order to optimize pricing and passenger traffic.

Today, fare collection technologies involve the latest electronic payment systems, ranging from magnetic stripe and smart card to systems allowing payments and validation via smart phones. Each option has its advantages and drawbacks, depending on the needs of each transit agency. At WSP, we have the experience and expertise to know what the best fare collection system is for your specific case.

In Seattle, we were able to determine that the smart card technology as the best fit for the integration of the Swift BRT’s fare collection system.
