MTR Tuen Ma Line

West Rail was completed under Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR) in December 2003 and at that time Hong Kong's largest civil construction project. With the name changed to MTR West Rail Line after the MTR-KCR merger, it has eventually become a key part of the Tuen Ma Line.

A strategically placed 30.5km-long domestic passenger railway, the West Rail project consisted of nine stations and Pat Heung Maintenance Centre, Asia’s largest maintenance facility. This part remains a much-needed link for areas of increasing population in the Northwest New Territories and urban Kowloon. 

As lead consultant and project manager for the Pat Heung Maintenance Centre, Kam Sheung Road Station, and the now MTR headquarters building, we carried out full engineering detailed design and construction supervision covering civil, structural, electrical and mechanical (E&M) engineering works, railway engineering interface and alignment, as well as maintenance planning, traffic, environmental, town planning and cost control consultancy. We were also appointed as the lead E&M consultant for the Tuen Mun Station and Siu Hong Station on design and construction supervision of station services systems.

We also provided E&M consultancy services for the contractor appointed to construct Nam Cheong station, which was back then a new interchange station between the MTR network and the KCR West Rail with the Airport Express and the Kowloon Express highway running through it.

Moreover, we were the lead consultant for the system-wide tunnel ventilation system design for the West Rail, from detailed design and subway environment simulation modelling to SCADA system for power, environment and other sub-system status. We also provided additional services including vehicle inspection services, design for the viaduct between the Tin Shui Wai Station and Siu Hong Station and reprovision of two affected light rail stops.

The Shatin-to-Central Link was the largest expansion of Hong Kong’s metro network, of which the construction officially began in 2012. The project involved stretching the existing Ma On Shan Line from Tai Wai to Hung Hom (now part of the Tuen Ma Line) and extending the East Rail Line across the harbour.

As part of the project, WSP was the building services detailed design consultant for the modification of the Ma On Shan Line stations from original 4-car train operations to 8-car train operations, as well as the new Hin Keng Station. Modifications works included lengthening the existing platform and retrofitting the automatic platform gate onto the extended platform.
