What is environmental due diligence?

 Environmental due diligence assesses environmental, health and safety risks that may affect asset value, compliance obligations and future liabilities, supporting informed investment decisions.

Do you only assess how environmental issues could affect our investment, or do you also consider wider environmental and social impacts?

Environmental due diligence at WSP is informed by a double materiality perspective. This means we consider:

  • Financial materiality – how environmental, climate and sustainability issues could affect the performance, value and risk profile of a company or asset, including potential liabilities, regulatory exposure and future constraints;
  • Impact materiality – how a company’s activities, operations or assets may impact society and the environment, including risks to reputation, compliance, licence to operate and long term sustainability.

By assessing both perspectives, we provide a more complete understanding of the full environmental risk profile, supporting confident investment decisions and helping clients anticipate how regulatory expectations, stakeholder scrutiny and sustainability performance may evolve over time.

Does environmental due diligence include regulatory and product risk?

Where relevant, yes. For regulated and product‑based sectors, due diligence can include assessment of chemical compliance, product risk and regulatory exposure alongside traditional asset‑based reviews.

Is this service available beyond the chemical sector?

Yes. Environmental due diligence is relevant across a wide range of sectors and asset types, including infrastructure, energy, real estate, manufacturing and mixed investment portfolios.

Product and chemical risk assessment is applied where it is relevant and material, alongside site based, operational, regulatory and future risk considerations, to provide a proportionate and decision focused assessment tailored to the nature of the assets and the transaction.

How does environmental due diligence support long‑term value?

By identifying how environmental risk, regulation and sustainability expectations may evolve over time, due diligence supports better post‑transaction decisions and long‑term resilience.
