Brian McCarthy sees hydrogen as an opportunity to decarbonize nearly every aspect of our economy and improve air quality in local communities.
As a child, Brian enjoyed learning how the world works. Being an engineer gives him the opportunity to experience that same sense of wonder by being involved in cutting edge technology developments and work on projects that make a difference in the world.
On the surface, his background in oil and gas refining sounds like a bit of a misfit, but when you scratch below the surface it makes perfect sense. Hydrogen has been used within the petrochemical industry for decades and the existing knowledge base to develop hydrogen to boost decarbonization will come from refining.
As National Hydrogen Market Lead in the U.S., Brian shares about his challenging and exciting work to support the full value chain of hydrogen opportunities from mobility to production and transport to storage.
What inspires or motivates you in your career?
What inspires me through my career has evolved over time. One theme has always been learning and understanding how the world works as best as I can. I found a lot of satisfaction working with colleagues that are starting their careers. Being on a team that's highly engaged has an inherently very satisfying aspect to it.
What are some impactful projects you have been a part of?
The most interesting projects that I've worked on throughout my career were the ones that had great challenges we were able to able to overcome. More recently, I was fortunate to work on renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel projects where hydrogen technology that I was working with was deployed on those projects to support the production of those clean fuels.
