Developing the first power plant in the Marcellus Shale gas field, Panda Power Funds wanted to maximize efficiency and minimize emissions.
Panda selected Gemma Power Systems to be its EPC contractor for the 829-MW Liberty Generating Station. As Gemma’s engineering partner, we provided detailed design services, including balance of plant engineering, field engineering and overall plant performance testing. Our team also worked closely with Panda, Siemens Energy and Gemma to develop the identical 829-MW Patriot Generating Station simultaneously, allowing the company to realize cost savings and reduce schedules.
Emissions controls and reduced impact
Panda wanted to make the most of its investment by using first generation technology. Our design used Siemens single-shaft H-class technology, the first in the U.S., to achieve operating efficiencies of 60%.
In addition to efficiency, Panda also wanted to reduce emissions. We used advanced controls technology to minimize emissions to make the gas-fueled powerplant one of the cleanest in the U.S.
Panda’s commitment to clean energy meant it also wanted to reduce the impact on the surrounding area. Our design incorporated air-cooled condensers and minimal liquid discharge systems to decrease water use and eliminate potential impacts on sensitive species in the watershed. To keep noise to a minimum, our design also features special low-noise fan blades and noise attenuating building enclosures.
